On September 21st 2012, four Australian high school students will travel to Italy to compete in the International Olympiad in Informatics, a two-day ten-hour six-question elite computer programming contest. For the week beforehand, they will undergo intensive training at the University of New South Wales. Their names are Michael Chen, Daniel Goldbach, Joshua Lau and Nicholas Laver. These are their stories.

IOI Day
[B G#b E F#7, repeat as necessary]
[Andante, autotuned]
Carpe diem! Waking up in the morning.
Take a deep breath of Lake Garda's air.
Gotta caffeinate, gotta get to breakfast
Eat in parallel, take our showers in serial
Everybody knows that today's a big day;
Gotta get down to the con-test
File onto the bus and
ride to the end
And we've crammed our algos
Read up on our big Os
But our practice time's up--
will our hard work take?
It's IOI day, IOI day,
gotta ace IOI day
Contest starts; we've gotta hold back
from the keyboard, keyboard
"Patience," we say,
"pulls us through IOI day!"
And we find something we can code up
that's our reward,
Function here, function there (yeah!)
Reams of code, everywhere (yeah!)
** One, ze-ro, one,
** that's IOI in binary
11.45; question three's going my way
writing so fast my fingers might die
proof, proof, think about proof
you know what it is
try DP, graph theory
the greedy's never right, no-oh...
try comp geometry
now to code it
Verify those algos
Amortise those big Os
Can we get this code out
without a mistake?
It's IOI day, IOI day,
gotta ace IOI day
Fingers flying, dreams won and lost
on the keyboard, keyboard
Jaz and Chris say
this is exactly why they
picked us for the team: 'cause we're way too
smooth to ignore...
Function here, function there (yeah!)
Reams of code, everywhere (yeah!)
Cut, paste, post-haste
that's the way we hack this stuff up.
Input starts with '12 A'.
Our program no parlez!
Reread the problem text now
we feel obsessed now
we're gonna get this damn thing right...
contest's end isn't far 'way
rereading word after word...
We've got our country's pride to defend!
(Chen, Laver, Lau, Goldbach!)
Now staring at a print job
of a code glob
it's so confusing:
long code, buggy code
medal hopes by the wayside
passing by are the Russians, States, the Chinese
scorin' full marks: full marks! wanna scream
check my timeouts: I may need to tweak them
we're gonna solve this; c'mon c'mon y'all
You say, I say,
we're gonna best IOI day,
Final lines falling into place, drowning
out the sorrow
IOI day, IOI day,
aceing IOI day,
Then it's back to the drawing board for
tomorrow's morrow!
Compile it, run a test (yeah!)
Click `submit' -- it scores the best! (yeah!)
Done! Done! Done! We're--
...looking forward to the buffet.
